Hart High Speech & Debate

Hart High Speech and Debate has had quite a few successes this year!!  We have some extremely talented students competing this season.

Our varsity competitive season began with the Fall Open Debate tournament at Canyon High School on November 18 with seniors Joe Brennan and Dominic Cortez earning a Superior Certificate for their winning record in Parliamentary debate.

We ended the fall semester with the Winter Congress tournament on December 8, 2018 where Joe Brennan took first place in Varsity Congress debate and the Open Individual Events competition at Granada Hills Charter High School on December 15, 2018 where Joe Brennan took 9th place out of 50 competitors in Spontaneous Argumentation.

We jumpstarted the new semester at Oak Park High School for the Spring Congress tournament where Joe Brennan once again flexed his debate muscles by taking 2nd place in varsity congress.

We had an Open Individual Events competition at West Ranch High School on February 2nd, and 3 of my 4 competitors took awards in their events. Sophomore Angela Ramirez took an Excellent certificate in Spontaneous Argumentation, Sophomore Kyla Jones received a Superior certificate in Original Prose and Poetry, and Senior Crystal Salinas took an Excellent certificate in that same event. We finished the regular season with a trip to Cal Lutheran University for the President’s Day weekend to attend a college invitational tournament. 3 of my 4 competitors took awards: Zoe Titus took 3rd place in Original Prose and Poetry, and Joe Brennan and Angela Ramirez both broke to the final round in Varsity Congress debate. Joe took 6th place and Angela received a medal for being a first-time competitor who broke to finals.

As we get ready for State and National qualifiers for the month of March, we anticipate some great competitions.
